Why This Full Time Influencer Deleted Instagram with Blogger Coach, Megan McQueen

My guest today is Megan McQueen, who is often referred to as the Beyonce of blogging. She built her life and career around helping women build online platforms where they can serve their passion while making an income from home with her business Bloom Into Beautiful. What a lot of people don’t know about Megan is what took place before Bloom Into Beautiful came around. In this episode, Megan shares the harsh realities of chasing fame on Instagram and what she decided to do about it 4 years ago that changed her life forever.

About Megan and her coaching business

Megan has many options on how she coaches but her favorite is 1-on-1 coaching. She enjoys having those more intimate conversations on the ins and outs of Instagram, how to start a website, and how to make money from blogging just to name a few. Megan also offers courses for those that may not have the time for coaching and more recently has started a management company to help influencers with emailing and pitching to brands. “It’s a lot of fun but also a lot of hard work but I love getting to connect with these women every day,” Megan tells us.

How she grew her IG account to 50k but realized it had an unhealthy place in her life and needed to course correct

When Megan first got into Instagram, she let the fame and glory aspect of it all get to her. She really let it consume her and was constantly looking at her number of followers, number of likes, and sales. It was when her husband spoke up explaining that her Instagram is all she was really focused and caring about right now. At the time it was something hard for Megan to hear but she recognized it was something she had to hear. This was the wake-up call she needed.

During this time, Megan works really hard at whatever she is doing, and at this point in her life, she had never learned what taking a break meant or what caring for yourself looked like. This work-work-work mentality combined with the need for more followers, more likes, more money ended up being poison for her.

After coming home from NYC fashion week and being hit with this reality, she found herself driving to work asking herself “what am I doing, how did I get here”. That’s when she felt the Lord say “delete it all”. At first, she brushed off this notion but by the time she got to the parking lot she had made up her mind and deleted her Instagram account.

How Megan approaches Instagram differently now

At first, Megan had regret over her decision to delete her account but over time that soon turned into relief. This is also around the time that her coaching business started to flourish. It was during a hiking trip a few months later, hitting the top of the trail overlooking a beautiful view, Megan started to pray and seek God. In this moment, she heard him whisper to her, “watch what I can do”. She knew she had to let go and give God the reigns to everything. Megan started over again with a new account and almost a year since deleting her account she went full-time in her coaching business.

Megan realized she needed to take a new approach with her relationship with Instagram. She talked to her husband and asked him to keep her accountable this time around. Megan also surrounded herself with amazing women who encouraged her and built her up to do good things with the platform as opposed to focusing on a number.

How to monetize your Instagram platform

Megan breaks down the three avenues you can take with a platform to make money.

  1. LikeToKnowIt - the affiliate program that allows you to link different products through your Instagram account. When someone makes a purchase through your link, you’re making a small commission of it. (Tune in to the full episode for even more details on using this platform!)

  2. Brand Deals - this is where you work with companies that send you a product for free and possibly pay you for helping to sell their product. The type of collaboration depends on your following and other details.

  3. Multi-level Marketing - becoming a distributor with these different companies you can sell products for a commission. Not as popular but is still an option.
