Ask Me Anything Q&A | From Hiring to How I Do My Hair

You submitted your questions and I'm answering them ALL on this Q & A podcast episode.

So let’s talk about it... from hiring to how I do my hair, this was fun!

Q & A

How and where do you license fonts for your designs?

We license up to 2 fonts for our clients and the majority of our fonts come from Creative Market. If the font is being used in a logo, we will pull it into Illustrator and add our own customizations to make it unique. Once the client receives their style guide, they will receive the licenses for the fonts.

How often should you update your website?

I know this might not be what you want to hear, but you should be updating the content on your website every week. This can be a blog, podcast, show notes, galleries etc. - doing this will make your website more searchable in Google. Having new, relevant and fresh content along with using key words will encourage Google to bring people to your website. Updating and redesigning are not the same thing though, so tune in to get the full answer on how often you should redesign your website.

How do you have time for your hair and makeup with a toddler?

Hah! Oh how I knew something like this would pop up! To be honest… there isn’t much of a secret. I’ve always been one to want to start my day by feeling fresh, so getting ready first thing has been part of my routine my whole life. Additionally, I keep it simple (toddler mom life). My makeup takes about 5 minutes, nothing special, and my hair is styled twice a week at the most… many times I’m rocking a bun or yesterday’s hair!

How do you attract customers without being pushy or annoying?

Be so good that people cannot ignore you. Building a strong brand does that, and that goes far beyond design. Having your brand stand out from other competition, being consistent (not just with social media) and showing up confidently will automatically bring customers to you. With that, providing a clear message to your audience of what it is you do and how you can help them will add integrity to your business and drive business.

How much time and energy do you put into your Instagram page?

Making sure that you work smarter, not harder is key. Social media can be overwhelming, I know! Being organic, knowing what works and what doesn’t, encouraging clients to share and showing up consistently with all add value to your Instagram. If that means hiring someone to handle social media for your company so it has the attention it needs, do it!

How did you know it was the right time to hire and how did you find the right people?

Oh, good question! I know it’s easy to think that you have to have a full salary ready to go to hire someone, but you can start off in a much smaller capacity. Whether that is a 1099, freelancer or hiring per project you do not have to start someone off full time as a W2. At BrandWell, I started my designers off with 1-5 hours of work per week and then grew from there. Also, make sure you’re looking at a new hire as an asset not an expense - it is only bringing growth and value to your business.

So how do we find the right hire? Making sure you like the person, paying attention to their work ethic like, following up on references and giving your hires a trial period are all steps to take when finding the right person for you.

What do you do to combat burnout as a busy entrepreneur?

I’ve had my fair share of times feeling burnt out… it probably happens a few times a year. One thing I did was put systems into place where I can step away from BrandWell and it can still run - this is SO important. In addition, relying on your team and learning how to say no to things you can’t handle is a simple way to take the load and stress off of yourself. It is always important to recognize what it is that causes you to be overwhelmed and take steps to manage those things.
